The IH Farmall Super A and Super AV tractors were renowned workhorses produced by International Harvester from 1947 to 1953. These versatile machines played a pivotal role in the postwar agricultural boom, providing farmers with reliable power for a wide range of tasks. The Super A was the first of the two, boasting a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine capable of generating 22 horsepower. It emerged as a successor to the popular Farmall A, featuring a more streamlined design and an improved transmission. The Super AV, introduced in 1951, shared the same basic platform as the Super A but was equipped with a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder diesel engine that delivered around 25 horsepower. This made it particularly attractive to farmers seeking greater fuel efficiency and lower operating costs. Both the Super A and Super AV tractors were known for their simplicity, durability, and ease of maintenance. They incorporated a robust cast-iron construction, a straightforward mechanical design, and readily available parts. These factors contributed to their longevity and popularity among farmers, many of whom continued to use them for decades after their initial production run. The Super A and Super AV models featured a variety of innovative features for their time, including a hydraulically controlled lift system for implements, a power take-off (PTO) for operating machinery, and a three-point hitch that facilitated quick and easy attachment of implements. These advancements significantly enhanced the versatility and productivity of these tractors, allowing farmers to complete a wide range of tasks with greater efficiency and ease.
